It is easy to think that just because you own or are part of a small business that you don’t need a business plan or that a business plan won’t be relevant. Likewise, if you’ve seen repeated success without a plan, it doesn’t mean that success will continue.
Get a business plan
If you haven’t got a business plan, this should be addressed urgently and is particularly important if:
You are at the start of a new financial year
You are considering a major change in an existing business
You are a start-up or going to start a new venture
You are looking for loans or investments
You are looking to get your business ready to sell
Writing a business plan
The process of writing the business plan is an important step for a business owner looking to grow and develop their business. Business Planning requires you to take time out of your day-to-day activities IN your business to spend quality time focusing ON your business.
An effective business plan will:
Review and consider the direction of the business
Identify and agree common goals between directors, shareholders, and team members
Identify and prioritise your key goals
Identify and prioritise your key goals
Set timetables and create strategies for achieving your goals
Develop a template to review actual performance against targets
Divide your goals into short term and long term quick wins vs. key projects
Once your business plan has been created progress comes from ensuring business plans are actively implemented and updated with regular reviews and progress tracking.
Studies have shown that companies that plan and regularly review their results grow 30% faster.
